Roadworks for Water Pipes Cause Long Delays

ROADWORKS in Byker are causing heavy traffic delays and are set to continue until the weekend, as Northumbrian Water contractors lay 150m of water pipe on Shields Road.

The road, which is already quite narrow and a favourite on local bus routes, has been backed up more than usual, since the work began on Tuesday.

The project is part of a PS66m, 220km project to maintain and improve water quality in Tyneside and Gateshead over a five-year period.

Alistair Baker, from Northumbrian Water, said: "We started work on Tuesday, March 29, and it is expected to be finished for the weekend. It was agreed in advance with Newcastle City Council and with the knowledge of the integrated public transport management.

"We have installed five-way traffic lights in the junction of Shields Road, Heaton Park Road, Brinkburn Street and opposite Barclays bank.

"There are also three pedestrian crossings in that area too, so it's a complicated arrangement. …
