WOOLGOOLGA is once again showing its community spirit, with locals coming together to support free monthly breakfasts for the hungry and homeless.

Helping the Hungry, held the last Friday of each month at the beach reserve, aims to feed those who might otherwise go without a meal.

"Helping the Hungry has been set up as a very small way to offer some assistance," co-ordinator Lisa Nichols said.

"Many people including young women are sleeping in their cars, and many people and families are setting up illegally at back beach and the lake.

"Youth who are in need have to relocate to Coffs Harbour, taking them away from their schooling.

"Then there are people who have accommodation but once they have paid their rent there is not a lot of money left for food or other grocery items."

Ms Nichols said in addition to providing food, the breakfasts offered social inclusion for those who may be feeling isolated.

The breakfasts have seen the community jump at the chance to help those in need. …
