Bowlers Banned after Biff on Greens

Article excerpt

AN all-in brawl on the bowling green. Wow! Does this mean we'll be introducing red cards or sending blokes for 10 ounces in the sinbin to cool off?

The knuckle-up is reported by AAP to have happened on March 5 at a top-level preliminary final in Bendigo.

Two bowlers started the ruckus when it's believed one punched the other in the face for bumping into him when he celebrated a delivery by running down the rink, jumping over bowls and high-fiving his teammates.

In no time both teams were into it, delaying the game between Bendigo and Eaglehawk for at least a quarter of an hour.

The two who started the fisticuffs pleaded not guilty to a number of Bowls Victoria disciplinary committee charges, including acting in a threatening and intimidating manner and bringing the sport of bowls into disrepute.

Both were found guilty and rubbed out -- one until the end of November for delivering the first punch and the other to the end of October for "making unnecessary contact".

The suspensions mean the pair can't set foot on a bowling green anywhere in the world.

But a boxing ring? Now that's a different matter.

Southies dominate

REIGNING premier South Lismore has ended East Lismore's brief spell at the head of the Northern Rivers District Bowling Association top grade pennant competition.

The two sides met in the third round with the Southies winning by 29 shots and taking all 10 points.

Ballina is running a close second after landing nine points and a 24-shot margin against a Casino RSM side that is languishing on the bottom rung of the ladder with only two points from the three rounds.

In the other No 1 match, Alstonville had its first round win of the season, picking up nine points with an 18-shot win over Lennox Head.

The points table: South Lismore 25, Ballina 24, East Lismore 19, Lennox Head 11, Alstonville 9 and Casino RSM 2.

This Saturday, East Lismore No 1s will play Ballina at East, Lennox Head will be at home to South Lismore, and Alstonville will travel to Casino RSM.

Leaders in other grades: No 2 Evans Head, No 3 Lismore City, No 4 Alstonville, No 5 Ballina RSL, No 6 South Lismore and No 7 Lennox Head. …
