Mathis Should Be Next Pride of the Jaguars Choice

Article excerpt

Byline: Ryan O'Halloran

This Jaguars offseason has been entirely about The New - new defensive coordinator (Todd Wash), new free agents (seven additions) and new optimism (however misguided it might be).

But at some point this spring, the Jaguars should dip into The Old and recognize a key player from their last two playoff teams.

The team should name cornerback Rashean Mathis as the next member of the Pride of the Jaguars.

Mathis announced his retirement last month after a 13-year career - the first decade with his hometown Jaguars and the last three with Detroit.

Mathis' Jaguars resume is case enough for why he should have his name next to Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor, Mark Brunell and Wayne and Delores Weaver.

The Englewood High alum is tied for fifth in years of service (10), seventh in games (137), fourth in starts (129) and first in interceptions (30, 15 more than second-place Aaron Beasley).

The last two times the Jaguars were good, Mathis was a reason why. He had six interceptions in 2005. In 2007, he had only one regular-season interception but two picks in the franchise's last playoff victory (at Pittsburgh).

It's time for the Jaguars to honor one of their best-ever defensive players now that he's retired.

The Jaguars' second sixth-round pick (201) was acquired from Pittsburgh in the trade for kicker Josh Scobee.

MARKS GOES TO SCHOOL

Jaguars defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks will be one of 28 current and former players who will be in Fort Lauderdale this week for the second annual NFL Personal Finance Camp.

Per an NFL news release, the program offers players, "an opportunity to get an in-depth understanding of the people, investments and forces in the financial world, and equips them with the knowledge and tools to help them build generational wealth and maintain long-term financial security. …
