MIDDLESBROUGH sealed a play-off place and strengthened their Championship title hopes with a gritty 1-0 win over plucky Preston.

Head coach Aitor Karanka insists he is not looking at the league table and is just thinking about the next game. Yet that next game could put Boro top of the Championship as the promotion race comes to the boil.

Albert Adomah stabbed in a firsthalf winner against Preston to make it four wins on the spin for revived Boro and move them back up to second spot in the Championship. Now they are one point behind leaders Burnley but they have a game in hand - and they can cash that in tomorrow night as mid-table Reading visit the Riverside.

"At this point with six games to go, to be definitely in the play-offs shows how well we are doing," said Karanka. "At the beginning of the season the aim was to get into the play-offs and with the experience we had from last season we hoped maybe we could do better.

"But now we have to forget the play-offs, forget promotion and just focus on Tuesday."

#Boro have won five in a row at home and have only lost twice and leaked six goals all season at the Riverside but the boss remains cautious because his side have failed to make these situations count before.

"We now have a game in hand but we have to learn because we had the same situation at Blackburn and everyone thought we had three points in the pocket but we lost the game," he explained.

"For that reason we have to forget what could happen, where we could be in the table and just play the game because these three points would be amazing for us now but we must be at our best.

"People ask if I have set a points target this season and I say only this: the only aim is three points against Reading.

"In this league anything can happen and we know that so we have to focus only on the next game. …
