IRONWOMAN Series champion Jordan Mercer will draw on the strength of a battling clubmate when she competes in this week's Australian titles.

Not that the leading competitor at Noosa will need much help - she is a firm favourite to take out the open ironwoman at the back-end of the carnival.

When the lactic acid is burning and the arms start to tire, one of the most popular athletes in the sport will turn her thoughts to Tainui Kaihau, a youngster who is undergoing treatment for lymphoblastic leukemia.

"I'll be out there racing for T (Kaihau's nickname)," she said.

"I'll pretend he's out there doing it for me."

It's this attitude, her time for fans and the media which has made her one of the most sought after athletes in surf sport.

Young fans flocked to meet and greet their hero at Maroochydore yesterday morning and her younger clubmates will have a top mentor throughout the week.

Asked whether she was feeling pressure or expectation, Mercer said it wouldn't affect her performance. …
