The New Buildings That Are Creating a Landscape We Can Be Proud Of

A DEVELOPMENT based on the site of what was once the biggest pottery in Britain carried off two prizes at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Maling Exchange, a 45,000 sq ft office development within Hoults Yard Business Park off Walker Road in Newcastle, won the Building Conservation and the Commercial Property accolades in the 2016 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors North East Awards yesterday.

The office and studio complex - delivered by Brimms Construction and Xsite Architecture - was once part of the Maling Ford B pottery which at its height turned out 1.5 million items per month and employed over 1,000 people.

The judges praised the complex for breathing new life into the area and for providing an attractive, inspiring home for creative industries.

Recent developments have focused on revitalising the historic buildings, creating Maling Studios, The Old Forge and The Boiler House and a cafe in the 1879 clock tower.

The Hoult family acquired the business and used the space for storage and removals until 1983.

The development was one of 62 regional property schemes which battled it out before 400 local prop-erty professionals at the event at Newcastle Civic Centre, with Teesside University's new landmark building - known as The Curve - taking the Project of the Year title.

The Curve, a PS20m teaching facility, offers flexible learning space over four floors along with a 145-seat theatre, floating auditorium and roof terrace.

The new PS32m Emergency Care Centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead - delivered by Ryder Architecture and WSP Group - won the Infrastructure accolade for what the judges described as transforming patient care in the region. The Crowne Plaza Newcastle scooped the Tourism and Leisure award. …
