Academy Aims to Give North Talent a Boost; SQUASH

STARS of the region's junior squash scene met at the Northumberland Club in Jesmond for the inaugural session of the new elite AIM Training Academy.

They were put through their paces by top coaches including head coach Paul Bell, who is also in charge of the Scottish national squad.

Bell said: "The first session of the academy brought together 42 of the best squash players in the north to play and train together.

"They also gained exposure to the muchneeded sports science elements of the game with workshops on psychology and strength and conditioning.

"This has helped them prepare for the remainder of the season and given them a much more professional approach to their training."

Many of the youngsters involved have aspirations to play for their country at junior or senior level, make the sport their future career or to climb the national rankings to a coveted top-10 position.

They also received advice from sports psychologist James Newman. …
