THE opening round of the 2016 Avon Tyres British GT championship came to a premature end for North East racing driver Matthew Graham.

The Ebchester-based racer suffered a high-speed crash which put him and his Macmillan Racing Aston Martin out of the Brands Hatch event.

The 19-year-old started the two-hour endurance race from sixth on the GT4 class grid and was battling for second place when an Aston Martin from the higher GT3 category ploughed into his car at Pilgrim's Drop on the Kent track's GP circuit.

It was a heavy impact which saw the GT3 Aston driven by Scottish driver Phil Dryburgh launched into the air and Graham (pictured) into the trackside barriers - resulting in a lengthy safety car period as repairs were made to the track.

Having been taken out of the race in a promising position, Graham now faces an anxious wait on his participation at round two of the championship on Sunday as his team assess the damage and necessary repairs.

However, he is taking solace from the speed shown by he and his team-mate up to that point. …
