Sinfonia Deliver a Mozart Masterpiece

Mozart in Prague, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Sage Gateshead AT the end of the 18th Century, Prague was a cultural hotspot and Mozart was top of the pops there, mirroring the composer's own feelings towards the Bohemian capital.

His opera, The Marriage of Figaro, had been a huge success there, and he repaid the compliment by giving the city the premiere performance of his Symphony #38 in 1787.

Now known as the 'Prague', this was Mozart at the height of his powers and prepared to go off-piste by presenting the work in three powerful movements, omitting the traditional short dance section.

In a live performance for BBC Radio 3, with Sage One festooned in mics, Royal Northern Sinfonia welcomed back music director Lars Vogt as their conductor, for the first time in over three months, and delivered a fine performance of the Mozart symphony.

Vogt was bouncing with energy and his musicians responded accordingly as the 'Prague' moved from its imposing start, through the profound central section to its vigorous finale. …
