SCHOOL students from across the region and beyond will put their best case forward in the University of Southern Queensland Secondary Schools moot competition this week.

The annual contest gives high-school legal studies students a chance to extend their learning by experiencing courtroom advocacy and how to develop and deliver legal arguments within a court environment.

Heats are under way featuring schools from Downlands College, Christian Outreach College, Fairholme College, Kingaroy SHS, Lockyer District SHS, Pittsworth SHS, St Joseph's College, Toowoomba SHS, Whitsunday Anglican College, St Peter's Lutheran College Springfield, Emmaus College and Hillbrook Anglican School.

Head of USQ's School of Law and Justice Professor Reid Mortensen said the competition presented high-school students with an opportunity to develop and test skills that are valued in legal practice.

"This competition allows students to gain practical courtroom experience in the two moot courts at USQ Toowoomba and USQ Springfield," Professor Mortensen said.

"Students also have the chance to meet and receive mentorship from the university's law lecturers and from practising lawyers who support the competition. …
