A St. Augustine man and his three passengers were injured when gunfire raked their car, causing it to overturn and crash on Interstate 295 in Jacksonville during an apparent road-rage shooting Saturday night.

Investigators say the shooting might be linked to similar shootings earlier about 12 miles away on the interstate.

The Florida Highway Patrol is asking the public for help identifying and locating the person or people responsible for the shootings. The Saturday attacks occurred exactly one week after a 44-year-old tractor-trailer driver was shot to death in a road-rage case involving another trucker on Interstate 10 between Commerce Parkway and Chaffee Road on Jacksonville's Westside.

All adults, the four victims from St. Augustine and Pittsburgh, sustained minor injuries in the crash at southbound I-295 at Philips Highway about 10:30 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol.

The Times-Union isn't naming the recent victims because the shooter or shooters remained at large Sunday.

The victims were southbound on I-295 in a white Chevrolet Aveo sedan when someone from inside a passing vehicle fired several shots at them. The shots were fired from the passenger side of the passing car and hit the driver's side of the Aveo, the Highway Patrol said.

The Aveo driver swerved in an attempt to avoid the bullets. The sedan careened off the road onto the shoulder, where it struck a utility pole and overturned several times. The victims all had been wearing their safety belts, according to the Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol said it had no description of the person or people firing the shots or of their vehicle. The reason for the shooting also was unknown Saturday.

Earlier, a Chevrolet Trailblazer sport utility vehicle and a Toyota Sienna passenger mini-van were shot at on I-295 near Gate Parkway by possibly the same suspect or suspects earlier, according to the Highway Patrol.

Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to contact the Highway Patrol.
