Hundreds of Jobs Could Be Result of Lab Complex

PLANS to build a multi-millionpound laboratory complex at Newcastle's Science Central are set to create hundreds of high-quality jobs.

The Newcastle Laboratory would provide lab and office space for science companies and aim to build on the success of The Core, which has attracted a number of exciting new companies to Tyneside and was recently named one of the country's top work spaces.

The PS20m scheme from Newcastle City Council is aiming to win funding from Europe and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, and would raise the profile of the city as a world-leading centre for life sciences.

Proposals for the five to six-storey building come a week after it was announced that a PS20m research centre - the National Centre for Energy Systems Integration - is also set to be constructed at Science Central in an investment funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Siemens and Newcastle University.

The new development will be a speculative scheme, but council research has uncovered a need to provide accommodation for some of the region's innovative small businesses to grow.

A council spokesman said: "A Newcastle Laboratory is being planned on Science Central to deliver 7,500sq m of commercial laboratories and supporting office space for sciencebased companies.

"The building would offer highquality incubation and grow-on accommodation specifically geared to science-based commercial activities to meet the needs of innovative companies in this sector to accelerate the pace of current growth in the region.

"This would also serve to enhance our research and development capability, building on the North East's growing reputation for scientific excellence and pioneering research in the life sciences and healthcare sector. …
