Northerly Waves Shore Are a Disappointment When It Comes to Codling; SEA ANGLING

Article excerpt

Byline: SAM HARRIS

THERE were a few disappointed shore anglers last weekend when the big northerly sea came away and did not bring the expected codling in.

There were only one or two taken and nothing of any size. The best reported was 3 lb.

There are a few peeler crabs now starting to show in the traps and these will be the prime bait for a few species.

The beaches to the north, i.e. Druridge, Warkworth and Alnmouth, are still giving flounders and dabs, with occasional plaice and turbot.

There have also been one or two bass taken but due to the silly EU rules they must be returned alive to the water.

There are still no reports of any mackerel from the shore yet and there are still the usual small codling from the River Tyne. The River Wear is giving mainly flounders with odd small codling and coalfish.

I have two guests on the programme this week. My first t is Jason White from Dorset who is a specialist in traditional angling rods and vintage tackle.

My second guest is Michael Hennesy who is an Inspector with the Southern Ireland Inland Fisheries Board.

He will be talking about what Southern Ireland has to offer the sea angler on boat and shore fishing.

In spite of the conditions, some of the charter boats managed to get to sea and had a few codling and ling but nothing of any great size. The "JFK Two" out of the Tyne had Ling to 9 lb, Cod to 8lb and Pollock to 7lb mainly on squid baited hokis and daylights. The skipper Alan said the recent 'stir up' had badly coloured the water plus, with the green algae bloom, conditions were not good -especially for those using sidewinders and shads.

If you wish to book on Alan's boat can contact him on 07808 684 358.

Another two charter boats to add to your list : "Genesis" runs out of Seahouses and is skippered and owned by David Fordy. …
