IS it any wonder parents are prepared to accept a PS60 fine for taking their child out of school during term? The Gazette has carried out research comparing the cost of holidays during term time and school holidays.

It comes amid a row over the legality of issuing fines to parents for taking term-time holidays with their children.

You'll not be amazed to find out that whatever your budget, wherever you want to go, you'll shell out hundreds more by sticking to the rules.

Our brief was simple, a holiday for a family of four of two adults and two children. We picked roughly the same two periods in July - one week before the school holidays start and a second once they've begun.

BUTLIN'S The first destination was Butlin's in Skegness. The holiday camp includes a pool, restaurants and plenty of entertainment.

Our search found a standard apartment for three nights from July 15 was PS394.

However, if we wanted to go just two weeks later, the price for the same standard apartment soars more than 50% to PS606.

The Gazette contacted Butlin's but the holiday firm was unavailable for comment.

CENTER PARCS A pricier option for a summer holiday within the UK is Center Parcs, which remains a hugely popular destination.

We checked out prices for the operator's Whinfell Forest park in Cumbria. If you want to go during school holidays, you'll need to save up.

A week's stay in a two-bed woodland lodge will set you back PS1,748 for the week beginning July 25.

Opt to take your children out of school, two weeks earlier from July, and you'd make a saving of PS320 - having to pay PS1,428.

A spokeswoman for Center Parcs told The Gazette that the difference in price reflected a reduction during term time rather than an increase during the school holidays. She said: "Our breaks are more popular than ever and we are almost full, all year round. …
