IT'S the time of year when our Research and Development team takes a look back at the successes of our clinical trials over the past 12 months.

In 2015 - 2016, we're proud to say our trust opened 180 new clinical trials, and 2,500 patients took part in research we hope will benefit thousands of patients around the world for years to come.

For this reason, we'd like to join the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) in thanking, not only our own patients, but the millions across the country helping us find and demonstrate the effectiveness of new treatments for a range of common conditions.

In the 10 years since the NIHR's inception as the research arm of the NHS, five million patients are estimated to have taken part in clinical research at pioneering trusts like ours, paving the way for new, improved NHS treatments and services.

In the past year our clinical trials have seen us look at how we can improve patients' well-being during and after their stay in intensive care in a study known as POPPI. …
