Curating a Green Future; Grafton Racecourse Manager Cookson Cannot Wait for New Apprentice

RACING: Clarence River Jockey Club racecourse manager Drew Cookson cannot wait to have a new apprentice learning the trade under his guidance.

The seasoned course curator knows the future of the industry is through apprenticeships so he was feeling quite positive after Racing NSW announced the creation of 27 new positions around the State - including one under Cookson.

"I think it is teriffic," Cookson said. "I have sort of been beating that drum for a few years now and it has finally come to fruition.

"It is great for the racing industry because there is not enough skilled labour getting trained within the industry."

The new apprenticeships will have a sole focus on racecourse curation and sports turf management. They will be four-year apprenticeships and will be located in eight different regions of NSW.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys heralded the courses as a step forward for the racing industry and move to better the future. …
