NEWCASTLE United can become a "force" again under Rafa Benitez who has created a "buzz" around Tyneside by committing to the club, believes John Beresford.

On Wednesday, Benitez signed a newly-redrawn three-year deal to remain with the Magpies despite relegation to the Championship - and his contract now includes watertight guarantees the Spaniard will have full control over all "football-related matters."

Former Newcastle left-back Beresford is relieved Benitez has decided to commit, though he admits he did not expect the ex-Real Madrid boss to stay following demotion.

Now, however, Beresford sees an extremely bright future for Newcastle under Benitez's tutelage.

"I said before we were relegated I did not have a problem if Rafa Benitez stayed," the 49-year-old told Play With A Legend during an event played at St James' Park.

"In my heart, I thought he would go somewhere else.

"What he has seen over the last month is this is a special place and I think he has taken a massive step backwards. …
