SOME may say going to a new hairdresser is a bit like going on a first date.

You may be a bit nervous or maybe even excited and there will almost always be some element of risk involved.

But there are a few things you can do before, during and after the appointment to get the best out of your new hairdresser and make sure the experience is memorable for both of you for all the right reasons.

Before the appointment

If you are new to an area, googling local salons, websites and social media pages are a great way of window shopping, Salons and stylists use these tools as an online portfolio these days, almost a resume of their work for your approval.

Not all salons are the same, neither in the work they focus on, the products they use or the prices they charge for their services.

Doing a little online stalking helps to narrow down the choices and can help you locate a stylist/salon that suits your requirements.

A new stylist usually means it could be time for a new hairstyle or maybe even a whole new approach. Even though a consultation should be included in every salon visit no matter how long you have been going there, first time visits will need a little extra time, so make sure you let reception know you are a first timer when you book. Your stylist needs to get to know you and your hair before they can truly get a sense of what your needs are. Usually 10-15 minutes will be enough time for you to relax into the experience and bounce around some ideas with them.

Some people change hairdressers because they are looking for a change of hairstyle. Others are happy with their look but may be after a change in services or even a more convenient location.
