THE Cleveland and District Summer League began last week with a number of the division one championship contenders starting well.

Beaumont Accountancy Nomads A opened their fixtures with an 8-2 win over Ormesby B, with hat-tricks from Mark Walpole and Steve Cooper.

Ormesby replied with wins for Sam Bailey and Tom Rayner against Steve Baines.

Swerve A started with a 9-1 victory over Hartlepool Westbourne, with hat-tricks from James Hill, Stuart Park and Steve Brunskill.

This match was much closer than the scoreline suggests as all of Hill's matches went to five, plus two of Park's. For Hartlepool, Tony Leonard and Keith Robertson clinched the doubles.

Ormesby A also tasted victory with a comfortable 8-2 defeat of league newcomers, Bishop Auckland A. Michael Young and Karl Shaw both scored hat-tricks, while Chrissy Edwards won one and the closest match was a win for Bishop's Jack Jacob, who beat Edwards by winning the fourth and fifth games at 13-11 and 14-12. …
