Man Who Sparked Armed Police Incident Avoids Jail

A MAN has avoided jail after admitting a string of offences linked to an armed police incident in Thornaby.

Lewis Devine, 23, pleaded guilty to six separate charges including sending a threatening message, using violence to secure entry to a premises, criminal damage, taking a vehicle without the owner's consent and driving without an appropriate licence or insurance.

He appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court yesterday, where he was sentenced.

Police converged on the Tedder Avenue area on Saturday afternoon after a report of a threat being made to a resident.

The criminal damage related to a broken window while the threatening message was made to a woman via telephone.

Devine also admitted using violence to enter a home in Whitely Road, Thornaby and taking a Volkswagen Golf without the owner's consent.

Several officers, including armed police, and police cars were spotted in the vicinity of Tedder Avenue and Whitley Road, while the police helicopter also hovered overhead. …
