Gympie Prepares as Gayndah Wraps Up

Article excerpt

GAYNDAH Cup winner, Robert's Command and runner up, Al's Briefs may be top contenders for the upcoming $5000 Three Cups gold Rush Challenge to kick off on the Gympie Racecourse with the RSL Cup on June 25.

Robert's Command is a very well performed front running type likely to be suited by the tight Gympie track while Al's Briefs has won four races on sand, three at Gladstone and one at Bundaberg for the Darryl Gardiner stable. The determination to buy a Court Command yearling some years ago proved a winning move by Chinchilla owner, Robbie Hammermeister with the now six year old, Robert's Command adding last Saturday's Gayndah Cup to his Jandowae Cup victory at his previous start.

The Gayndah Cup success pushed the Court Command -- Ludgate six year olds racecourse winnings to $141 200 for his 12 wins.

Robbie decided to buy the Court Command youngster at a yearling sale but his partners got cold feet and he missed the colt. Toowoomba trainer Tom Dougall put the polish on Robert's Command who ran fourth in Queensland's first two-year-old race of the season at Toowoomba. He then won a Toowoomba two-year-old maiden soon after as well as a $50,000 two-year-old at Dalby.

In last Saturday's 1400m $9500 Gayndah Cup, Robert's Command ($4.25, N. Evans) bounced straight to the lead at the start and just held on to win by a long head from the fast finishing Al's Briefs ($4, A. Van der Sanden) with $3 favourite, Spice of Life (G. Geran) coming from last on the turn to be third for the Matt Kropp Stable.

Winning double

ANOTHER winning double by Oakey trainer, Patrick Sexton at Gayndah in addition to his Eidsvold double the previous Saturday, propelled him to a one point win as the most successful trainer at the Eidsvold and Gayndah meetings. …
