Foxes to Blame for Pet Carnage; Rising Cases of Domestic Animals Targeted

URBAN foxes are being blamed for killing chickens and pet rabbits in Tyneside suburbs.

Stephen Lambert, a councillor in the Kenton area of Newcastle, said he has received 'dozens' of complaints in Kenton, Montagu and Kenton Bar,.

Families contacted Coun Lambert about foxes coming into gardens, ripping open bin liners and eating pet rabbits and chickens.

In one case, a resident of Ferrydene Avenue, Montagu, complained about two hens being killed.

"This is the second year running that we've had a number of concerns over urban foxes coming off the Moor and causing a nuisance in residential gardens. There's little the council can do directly about the problem as the fox, rightly, is a 'protected' animal. So it's up to the household to deal with them.

"It's the abundance of food and shelter, and the absence of predators - other than a car - that's enabled the fox to thrive in urban neighbourhoods like Gosforth and Kenton. …
