TABLES groaning under the weight of tasty food products greeted guests at the official launch of the Food Producers Hub in Mullumbimby's industrial estate last week.

The five producers of the myriad of morsels are all tenants in the hub, a 600m2 building with five commercial-scale kitchens, complete with ovens, grease-traps, cooling facilities and loading bays.

The development gives the producers - Persian caterer Koobideh, breadmaker Almond Road, Naked Byron Dips, beef brisket and pulled pork specialist Farmhouse Foods and fermented veg maker Alive Foods - the capacity to expand to meet the increasing demand for their distinctive produce.

The launch, in co-operation with Northern Rivers Food, was the culmination of two years' work by Mullum couple Richard Kowalski and Sharon McGrath, who said the hub was envisaged as something that would capture the spirit of Byron Shire.

"We saw the need for a food-related commercial premises in the shire and decided to take an educated punt," Mr Kowalski said. …
