A Rio-Bound Mac Gets Pat on Back!

GOLDEN boy Pat McCormack has been hailed as a "dream maker" by his Birtley head coach Graeme Rutherford after his qualification for the Rio Olympics.

McCormack will have home-town company at Britain's Olympic training camp - his twin Luke and club mate Calum French have been invited to sample the whole experience with a view to Tokyo 2020. Rutherford said: "It has been the club's ambition to have an Olympian and Pat has made that dream come true. We are so proud of him.

"Not only did he qualify he won the whole tournament in Baku taking the gold medal.

"I was over the moon with that because it was great for him not to switch off and think the job was done after qualifying.

"Pat never lost a round in five fights which cover 15 rounds. He will hopefully have added to his reputation and made sure he is in the judges' eyes at the Olympics.

"He will not go there without thinking of bringing back a medal. His dedication and determination is second to none.

"Pat is good enough to medal but is he old enough at just 21, has he the strength and maturity? Whatever happens his future is exciting.

"What with Pat's Olympic qualification, Ben Rees winning a European bronze at 75kg and being voted the best team at the Slovakia Box Cup it has been a great two weeks for the club."

After booking his place in Rio, McCormack (pictured left) finished his AIBA World Olympic qualification by taking gold with a unanimous win over Richardson Hitchins of Haiti.

Houghton's Josh Kelly has also qualified for Rio though h e went on to lose his semi.

| SOUTHPAW Peter Cope put seven months of waiting behind him at Gateshead Leisure Centre when claiming a narrow 77-76 points success over Abdon Cesar to take the Challenge belt.

Cope, who had not fought since late November, was made to work by Cesar for the result and was thankful for the vociferous support which would eventually roar him home. …
