Women Cast Adrift in a Man's World Where Gender Roles Are Just a Performance; REVIEW

BOYS WILL BE BOYS Bush Hall, W12 THE Bush Theatre has closed for a year-long refurbishment, but its work is spilling out into the community. For Melissa Bubnic's play, a scathing portrait of women navigating a world dominated by men, it has taken up residence at nearby Bush Hall. Usually a music venue, this is an apt spot for a show that involves moments of sultry cabaret and flamboyant dance.

At its heart is Astrid, a City broker in her forties who has managed to break through the glass ceiling. Yet her success has come at a price.

By learning to be brutal she's made herself isolated. When she interviews ambitious job applicant Priya, she decides to be her mentor. At the same time she blunders into a relationship with Isabelle, a prostitute she meets in a bar.

Both relationships are full of tension, even if not very convincingly fleshed out, and Bubnic writes provocatively about the poses women sometimes have to adopt in order to get ahead. …
