WHILE most kids were enjoying their lengthy school holiday Christmas break, Dale Curran elected to work six out of eight weeks at Haynes Mechanical.

At the age of 17, this Year 12 Mirani State High School student is undertaking secondary and tertiary studies while holding down a diesel fitting apprenticeship and driving himself to and from work.

But that's only a snippet of why Dale is a school-based apprentice or trainee of the year finalist in the 2016 Central Queensland Regional Queensland Training Awards.

Dale has a passion for all things mechanical; he looks forward to going to work every single day.

His love of working with his hands started with helping out his dad (Rodney Curran) on the family's 190-acre farm at Finch Hatton.

Dale said some of his fondest memories were helping his dad fix cane harvesters and tractors in the shed.

After a stint of work experience at Haynes Mechanical in 2014, Dale was offered an apprenticeship with the company and the rest is history. …
