HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER SOUGHT IN FATALITY

Jacksonville police were searching for a hit-and-run driver who killed a woman walking across the 5800 block of Merrill Road near Cesery Boulevard in Arlington about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Helen Schafer, 61, died after being taken to the hospital. She was struck by a black Ford Escape sport utility vehicle traveling east in the right lane of Merrill Road. The driver fled the scene, said Officer Melissa Bujeda, a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

Police located the SUV a short time later but not the driver, Bujeda said.

Earlier in the evening, police got a call from a woman living on University Boulevard saying her vehicle had been involved in a hit-and-run. That vehicle matched the description of the SUV being sought by police, and had damage, Bujeda said.

Bujeda said the woman told police she didn't know the name of the man who had been driving the SUV but that he was known to her.

Police described the suspected hit-and-run driver as an African-American man in his 30s, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and last seen wearing a white tank top and blue jeans.

Anyone with information can call the Sheriff's Office at (904) 630-0500.
