Article excerpt

A man police said was fatally shot by his son Saturday had lived in the neighborhood for several years and was a "guy everyone wanted to know," a neighbor said.

Carlton Wendell Allen, 55, lived in the Creekside Oaks neighborhood off Chaffee Road where on Monday, American flags dotted yards of brick houses surrounded by well-trimmed lawns.

Allen was fatally shot about 10 p.m. in the 1200 block of East McGirts Creek Drive, said investigators who learned it occurred when his son Zachery Nathinel Allen, 24, showed up at Baptist Health.

Both men and a brother of the younger Allen lived at the house as did the elder Allen's wife, said neighbor Herman Brown.

"He had the coolest demeanor about him," Brown said.

He said Zachery Allen would wave and greet Brown when he pulled up in his car.

Police did not report a motive, but said Zachery Allen has mental health issues, according to Times-Union news partner First Coast News.
