THE FOCUS was on speed when NSW Police Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, alongside local police, staged a dramatic showcase at Tweed to urge motorists to slow down on our roads.

Residents attending a showcase at Jack Evans Boat Harbour on Thursday were shown two car wreckages - one crashed at 60km and one at 100km an hour - to demonstrate the difference speeding makes in a car crash.

Mr Hartley, also the Commander of the Traffic and Highway Patrol, warned road users that three people had died on the roads within the Tweed Byron LAC command this year.

Speed was a common, avoidable, contributing factor in fatalities.

"Tight-knit communities such as this one feel the pain perhaps even more deeply when tragedy strikes," Asst Comm Hatley said.

"There might be someone here who has lost a loved one on the road and that loss leaves a mark on an entire community for a very long time. …
