New Rock Wall Will Stop Public Access; Waterfront Path at Ballina Will Be Blocked by 60m Wall

BALLINA Shire Council will allow the owners of four waterfront properties to build a 60m-long rock wall without providing public pedestrian access.

The council initially rejected a plan to build the 1.5m-high wall to protect the creek-side Camden Ln properties from erosion unless provisions were made to create a public thoroughfare.

But one of the property owners, solicitor Peter Carmont Snr, went to the Land and Environment Court to argue the case.

He said the wall would be built on private land that had only been open to the public through his and his neighbours' generosity.

The court ordered both parties to hold a conciliation conference to try to come to an agreement.

A Land and Environment Court commissioner visited the site on Monday and heard the complaints of locals who have lobbied against the wall's construction.

The court's final decision is yet to be made, but council development services manager Andrew Smith said the council would no longer require the landholders to provide a public pathway. …
