Since the Birthing Centre at the city centre's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) opened its doors five years ago, there has been more than 7,500 very special deliveries.

Senior Midwife for the Birthing Centre, Chris Saunders says: "We can't believe we've celebrated five fantastic years - it's' flown by so quickly.

She made the right choice.

Carleigh McLeod from Hebburn welcomed her first baby - Jacob James - into the world at the Newcastle Birthing Centre. She says the birth was just as she'd planned it. "It was perfect - amazing! And the room was so big, with everything you could want. An ensuite bathroom and a sofa-bed which has been fantastic because my partner Ryan could stay with us overnight. It's 's like we've been in a hotel - I feel like we're checking out!" Carleigh adds: "The staff were all absolutely brilliant - they really did go above and beyond to make us comfortable the whole time! …
