Article excerpt

Byline: Jude McBean Director Grafton Regional Gallery

A GREAT selection of work from the Grafton Regional Gallery's regional collection opens at 10.30am this Friday, July 15, in The Kirk at the Yamba Museum. The selection was inspired by the Clarence Valley and its recognisable icons such as the Clarence River, Angourie Point, the cane fields and our Jacaranda trees.

All members of the public are invited to meet the artists at the casual morning tea opening. Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson will open the exhibition. Warm winter nibbles and hot drinks are on offer.

Visions of the Valley is one of a series of outreach exhibitions the gallery presents in the Lower Clarence area. It represents the gallery's major regional collection, which has developed since the gallery was established in 1988. The regional collection represents the visual art history of the Clarence Valley and nearby regions. It gives a distinct identity to the gallery and significantly it contains contemporary artworks and traditional artefacts by the Aboriginal people of Bundjalung, Yaegl and Gumbaynggirr.

Artists on display include Cass Samms, Ken Done, Malcolm King, Frances Belle Parker, Graham Mackie, Henk Kaptein, John Millington, Rosie Vesper, Robert Moore, Deborah Taylor and Geoff Crispin.

Bookings for the official opening are appreciated for catering purposes. Contact the Yamba Museum on 6646 1399 or the Grafton Regional Gallery on 6642 3177. The Yamba Museum, which is run by the Port of Yamba Historical Society, is open to 2pm to 4.30pm on Saturday and Sunday and from 10am to 4.30pm Tuesday to Thursday and is in River St, Yamba.
