His Fontburn patch has yielded great sport and a week's rod average of 4.4 in mixed conditions.

"The quality and quantity of the Fontburn-reared trout made a real impression as the week wore on," he said.

One reason is favourable weather early in the year. NWL leisure department co-ordinator Christopher Hodgson said: "Angler numbers are up, rod averages are strong and fish are the best quality yet due to a mild winter. All contributed towards a great season so far."

Barry Wilson, fly fishing in the north shore bay, took his limit eight fish for 17lb and returned another 22.

In a TEFF heat at Chatton on Saturday, individual qualifiers were: 1 James Stephenson, 2 Lee Wilkinson, 3 Craig Compton. The pairs qualifiers were Lee Wilkinson and Connor Metcalf.

Oddfellows Fishing Club held a friendly competition on Sunday, which was won by John Pringle with a bag of 11lb 10oz.

Chatton Ladies Angling Club meet this Sunday at 9.30am. Paul Little will demonstrate knots in the morning and fishing in the afternoon. John Allison of Newcastle took a tagged rainbow in his limit bag, but had not entered the sweep. He won a free day's fishing as a consolation. There is a triple stocking this week.

South Linden has seen a week of bag limits and big fish. John Barnes of Guidepost caught 32 in two sessions, 21 over 6lb and the best 15lb. Early-morning fly anglers are asked to call Simon to book. Weekend sessions start at 5.30am. …
