Fight to Keep Pub Open; Owners Won't Give Up despite Much-Needed, Costly Upgrades

THE owners of Rappville Pub won't give up the fight to keep it open, thanks to overwhelming support from the community.

Peter St Clair and Jayne Fitzpatrick will soon launch a crowdfunding campaign to help them raise money to meet 2016 fire safety and kitchen standards.

They estimate the total cost of renovations would be about $160,000.

"We're trying to make a 105-year-old hotel meet 2016 fire safety, kitchen, and disability access standards," Dr St Clair said.

He said they couldn't afford the renovations needed to meet the standards.

"We thought we were progressing ... it's been a great challenge, but we're just getting hammered too hard.

"It's not the council's fault but it's balancing between being a heritage building and complying with safety standards of 2016."

He said another challenge was remaining economically viable during the "demise of small rural towns". …
