RACING: Clarence Valley- based trainer Wayne Lawson is excited to have a crack at going back to back in the Maclean Cup this year with champion galloper Nautile.

Lawson had set Nautile for the Maclean Cup some time ago, but needed the five-year-old gelding to pull up well from a run on Ramornie Handicap Day on Wednesday before he was ready for Sunday's feature.

With Allan Chau in the saddle, Nautile pulled up second last in the Benchmark 65 Handicap, but did enough to impress Lawson.

"Yeah we are still looking at the Maclean Cup, lets hope he can back up," Lawson said after the gelding returned to scale on Wednesday. "I think Allan will saddle him up again, he did nothing wrong today."

Nautile will drop seven kilograms from his tough 61kg weighting in the Benchmark 65, to only 54kg when he contests the Maclean Cup and according to Lawson the weight could prove the difference. …
