Flag Unfurled for France; Gympie Region Residents Show Support for Victims

THE Gympie region's community spirit knows no boundaries, as demonstrated by the Hammanns who have raised the French flag to half-mast following the horrific events in Nice yesterday.

Lawson Rd resident Cathy Hammann said yesterday she had been flying the French flag the day before to commemorate Bastille Day and, having taken it down at the end of the day, made the decision to fly it again after seeing the events on the news yesterday morning.

"It was a very spur of the moment thing," she said.

The Hammanns both hold dual-American citizenships and have lived in Australia for 41 years, 13 of which have been spent in the Gympie region.

She said her husband, Matt, was an avid flag collector and had accumulated flags from a variety of countries around the world.

For Mrs Hammann, the emotions of the attack cut very close to her own heart.

"We've got very close friends travelling in France," she said, adding that her own family members had recently spent time in Europe, too. …
