NEWCASTLE Diamonds needed to hammer in as big a victory as possible ahead of a tough second leg of the Knockout Cup quarter-final on Thursday, with the Tigers being always dominant at home, writes LAWRENCE HEPPELL.

Steve Worrall had passed the speedy Dimitri Berge on the home straight in heat one, along with Victor Palovaara, but hit the deck hard on the first bend to be excluded, and in the re-run with Simon Stead on a 15 metre handicap, Palovaara took a straight forward win in a shared 3-3. After Danny Phillips fell on the first bend of heat two, Lewis Rose took a massive lead over Nathan Greaves in a second share before Matej Kus and Ludvig Lindgren roared from the tapes in heat three over Sheffield guest Jonas B. Andersen for a home 5-1 opening the score to 11-7. Come heat five Kus and Lindgren hammered on the power to leave Stead standing in a 5-1, while Worrall won a hard first bend to take the lead in the sixth followed well by Palovaara to leave Howarth in third for a second 5-1 taking the score to a healthy 24-12. …
