Builder Helps in Win; Mackay' Engine Designer Powers Price to Victory

MOTORSPORT: Toby Price is not just one of Australia's best off-road drivers - he is one of the world's best.

He became the first Australian to win any class of the Dakar Rally at the start of this year.

Last month he competed in the gruelling Finke Desert Race, coming first in the bike leg and second in the truck leg.

A lot of this was down to Mackay's Luke Hendry, of Hendry's Performance Engines. He built the engine for Price's truck.

Hendry grew up racing against Price when they were kids.

"For the past 15 years or so we've done a lot of boat ski engines," he said.

"A team owner approached me to start building the engines for his off-road trucks."

Hendry said Price had been keen to race the truck for a long time so it was great chance to combine.

"It was great exposure for us too," he said.

Building an engine took hours and hours, Hendry said.

"The thing with the Finke Desert Race is it's 226km there and back, so they (engines) are sitting on the limit for so long, so you have to check everything three times," he said. …
