Vintage Bike Has Wheel Appeal

JOHN Corry began cycle racing when he was 16 and his first bike, handmade by Jack Harper in 1947, now sits proudly at Corry Cycles in Mackay.

"It's good that it's getting looked at and still being ridden," John said.

"Jack Harper was a well-known bike builder in those days and I never thought it would have ended up here."

The bicycle was restored by his grandson Ryan Corry, who said even though it had been modified a few times, it still had the original frame and a few of the original parts.

"It's good to walk into the shop and know it's here," Ryan said.

"I've ridden it a few times and it's turned a few heads. It does ride a bit strange but I'm still able to get it cranking and manage to get a bit of speed out of it."

Age doesn't seem to be part of John's vocabulary, as he still cycles every day, but the 85-year-old was quick to admit that he wouldn't be much good at digging holes. …
