WITH a berth in the Coffs Harbour Gold Cup up for grabs, the heat will be well and truly on in tomorrow's Sawtell Cup.

A strong field has accepted for the feature event over a mile but the winner may just be a gelding who's finished eighth in his past two starts.

Prior to that, the Hunter Kilner-trained Steve's Surprise had been in super form, winning races at Lismore, Grafton and Casino (Beef Week Cup) before a 2.8 lengths eighth to Red Bowers in the Murwillumbah Newmarket on June 26, when he was dropping back from 1400m to 1200m.

That was the son of Stratum's first outing in 30 days.

"We tried to have him declared a non-runner," Kilner revealed.

"They never closed the gates fully behind him. He fell on his nose out of the barriers then the jockey pushed him along and rode him for speed, which really didn't suit us."

In his last start Steve's Surprise again finished eighth but only 2.5 lengths behind the winner, this time in a blanket finish in the Maclean Cup. …
