TERESA Palmer is in her element in the new supernatural horror film Lights Out. The Adelaide-born model and actress stars as a young woman haunted by the evil spirit of her mother's childhood friend in the critically acclaimed film.

Palmer tells Weekend she was the one telling ghost stories in the playground while growing up on her father's farm in the Adelaide Hills.

"I don't know where my fascination with the supernatural was born, but I used to subscribe to this UFO magazine since I was seven," she says. "My friends and I would go horse riding during the day and then watch Goosebumps and Unsolved Mysteries. Even now I have the ultimate collection DVD pack of Unsolved Mysteries at my house."

The house Palmer refers to is the LA home she shares with her husband, US filmmaker Mark Webber, their two-year-old son Bodhi and her stepson Isaac.

Palmer is expecting her second child and also writes a parenting blog, Your Zen Mama. It's no surprise that she quickly formed a maternal bond with her young co-star Gabriel Bateman, who plays her character Rebecca's younger stepbrother.

"He's such a sweet guy and he has a way of just breathing and being present, which really keeps you on your toes as an actor," she says.
