THE trouble with loving Newcastle United as passionately as John Gibson does is the bad times are hard to shrug off.

Gibbo has seen more than most. He was just four years into a halfcentury of writing about the Magpies when he saw them lift the 1969 Fairs Cup.

It remains the last time he has been able to wax lyrical about his team lifting a major honour.

Since then there have been four relegations, but, according to great friend Malcolm Macdonald, what hit him the hardest was being denied the chance to watch his beloved team.

"John is the most ardent Newcastle United supporter on this planet," says the legendary No 9 of the 1970s.

"Since birth he has bled black and white. I have never seen a man so crestfallen, so diminished, as John when the NCJMEDIA newspapers (The Chronicle, The Journal and the Sunday Sun) were barred from St James' Park.

"He was so dreadfully hurt because he loved the football club more than any person on the planet. …
