OR some, a fifth-place finish for Mo Farah in his penultimate race before Rio raised eyebrows.

FThe wider public are not used to Farah being relatively low down the pecking order but that result over 1,500metres in Monaco should be taken as a positive.

His time of 3min 31.74sec may have been three seconds off his personal best but only three Britons have ever run that distance quicker: Sebastian Coe, Steve Ovett and Steve Cram.

For Farah, the run at the Diamond League was no more than a test by his coach, Alberto Salazar, in a bid to improve his speed work as he fine tunes the defence of his 5,000 and 10,000m Olympic titles.

Of his Monaco outing, the Londoner said: "I still get away with a positive feeling. I'm a 5,000m-10,000m guy and I just ran 3:31, so that's good."

More telling, perhaps, his time for the 1,500m in 2012 when he pulled off that golden double in London was three seconds slower than in Monaco last weekend. …
