COULD you add just one extra food item to your weekly shopping basket, if it meant giving a family or individual in need a more comfortable Christmas?

That is the question raised by the Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade, which is looking for volunteers to participate in an 18-week charity drive to fill the group's Christmas hampers.

The brigade needs about 200 volunteers for its new Basket Buddies campaign, in which participants buy one specified staple food item from a list each week from July25 until early December. Items, such as a tin of beetroot, packet of pasta, packet of jelly or tinned fruit, roughly cost between $2 to $5. The items will be combined to create a care package to feed the recipient or recipients for two to three days over the Christmas period.

Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade co-ordinator Trish Bignall said the hampers were delivered anonymously to people nominated by a local community group who need a hand, but who probably would not receive food or a gift hamper from another charity. …
