IT was a case of deja-vu when Sylvia Lewars, Irene Brown and Margaret Cockburn (Walker) repeated last year's success to retain the Percy Hedley Two-Bowl Triples title.

Losing finalists were Janet Gray, Pat Wade and Celia Connelly (Ravensworth A).

This was the season's third charity competition organised by the Northern Women's Bowling Association with all rounds played to 12 ends.

In the semi-finals, Lewars, Brown and Cockburn were very nearly toppled fron their perch by a much lesser-experienced trio of Walker clubmates Ann Garrett, Liz Timney and Jan Stewart.

The holders trailed throughout the match by 1-7 (five ends), 4-8 (seven ends) and 6-9 (nine ends).

Determined play brought Lewars, Brown and Cockburn to a level score of 9-9 with only one end left to play.

Their nerve held and with the addition of another three shots they earned a finals place 12-9 - but every credit went to Garrett, Timney and Stewart for a gallant effort.

The other semi-final was one to forget for Irene Stobbs, Moira Bowerman and Doris Lawson (Heaton) against Gray, Wade and Connelly. …
