Transfers Are Priority with Injuries

SUNDERLAND'S spate of pre-season injuries has made the club's pursuit of new signings all the more urgent, admits coach Robbie Stockdale.

New boss David Moyes has taken over a squad that is depleted in numbers, with four loanees having departed Wearside since the end of last season and several more players either released or sold.

With no new faces having arrived as yet, the squad was already paper thin - and that was before Jermain Defoe, Jan Kirchhoff, Jack Rodwell, Billy Jones, and Patrick van Aanholt all picked up knocks during the club's week-long stay in France.

Rodwell, Jones and van Aanholt are likely to recover in a matter of days, but Defoe's thigh problem and Kirchhoff's hamstring strain will sideline them for a longer period.

"It's not ideal, but I would say that some of those injuries are not too serious," said Stockdale.

"There are a couple of players left out as a precaution.

"But yes, the squad does need adding to. …
