Coast Lifesaving's 2016 Best Honoured; Hard-Working Volunteers, Competitors Recognised for Efforts over the Past Year

Article excerpt

HARD-working and selfless volunteers and surf sports competitors have been formally recognised for their outstanding contributions to surf lifesaving in the region.

The annual Sunshine Coast branch Awards of Excellence were held last Friday night at The Yacht Club, Mooloolaba.

The prestigious awards serve to honour and celebrate the outstanding achievements of volunteer surf lifesavers from across the Coast over the past 12 months.

During the 2015/16 season, local surf lifesavers combined to perform almost 33,000 preventative actions to protect beachgoers, treated 1815 first-aid patients and directly saved the lives of 780 people through in-water rescues.

It proved to be a golden night for Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club, with Peter Harvey taking out the prestigious Surf Lifesaver of the Year award, Michael Hughes recognised as the Sunshine Coast Volunteer of the Year, and Guy Tanner named Assessor of the Year.

It capped off a stunning 12 months for the relatively small club, after youngster Madison Douglas was named as Surf Life Saving Queensland's Breaka Under-14 Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year in March.

Alexandra Headland's Kate Skinner was recognised as the Sunshine Coast's Under-18 Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year, while Maroochydore's Benjamin Ellwood was named the 18-25 Young Surf Lifesaver of the Year.

There was also plenty of joy for Marcoola after the club was awarded the Buhk Wilkes Memorial Trophy, designed to recognise outstanding dedication and contribution to beach safety and lifesaving services on the Sunshine Coast.

Ironwoman Jordan Mercer was named the Sunshine Coast Athlete of the Year after a breakthrough season which saw her claim a maiden Kellogg's Nutri-Grain IronWoman title.

The majority of Sunshine Coast winners will go through as finalists for the state Surf Life Saving Queensland Awards of Excellence to be held at Novotel Twin Waters Resort on Saturday, August 13. …
