RAFA Benitez proved his powers of persuasion to Newcastle United fans very early in this summer's transfer window.

It would have been easy for 31-yearold Jesus Gamez to continue being a squad player at Atletico Madrid or even find first-team football elsewhere in La Liga.

But Benitez managed to ensure Gamez swapped life in Madrid for life in the Championship and become part of what fans are dubbing the "Rafalution" on Tyneside.

Gamez not only offers United experience, he will also offer them plenty of defensive cover.

He played across the back four at various stages in pre-season and also proved he wouldn't be pushed around by opponents when he was sent off in Lokeren for a clash with striker Marco Miric.

Benitez said: "I am really pleased to bring Jesus here to Newcastle.

"He is a very good defender who can play on both sides, left and right. He is experienced, I know he has great character and, importantly, he is an excellent professional. …
