Shark Barrier Is Sunk; Local Surfers Welcome 'Sensible Decision'

LOCAL surfers have welcomed yesterday's decision by the NSW Department of Primary Industries to discontinue installation of the shark barrier at Ballina's Lighthouse Beach.

Mark Hernage, president of the local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation Australia, formed as a result of the protests against the barrier, said it was a "sensible decision".

Mr Hernage organised two rallies opposing the barrier.

"Right from the start, we argued it was the wrong technology on the wrong beach," he said.

The surfers argued that the barrier would have cut through their take-off zone, particularly at the popular North Wall break.

But they also argued the barrier would interfere with the movement of sand.

Eco Shark Barrier Pty Ltd had three unsuccessful attempts at putting the barrier in.

The NSW DPI, in its statement, said the company had identified "significant installation and maintenance issues" making it unsafe to install the barrier. …
